WW says:

If the stove surround is of the old style with tiles glued directly to plywood, there is a fire risk as the heat is transmitted through the tiles to the wood. There have been instances where the wood behind tiles has started smouldering unseen, and the boat has caught fire with unfortunate loss of life.
There is an excellent sheet of information for solid fuel stove installation produced by Soliftec at: www.soliftec.com/Boat%20Stoves%201-page.pdf which shows the best form of construction with use of calcium silicate board and air gaps to give heat protection.
