Generator Power

I'm considering buying a generator for my boat. I'm reading a lot about the "earthing" of them. I'm in a marina with pontoons. How do I earth it as no bank or earth is near?

WW says:

If you are using a generator on the pontoon which is certainly the best idea as exhaust fumes are less likely to enter the boat; it can be earthed to the pontoon itself. If the pontoon has metal supports into the water and the earth below strapping a wire to the metal will give a good earth point. If the pontoons are wooden or concrete which is less suitable; connecting a wire to a piece of metal and dropping it into the water so that it goes down to the bottom will provide a suitable earth.
