Lombardini engines

What are they like

Asked by: Tony Price  | 1.26pm, Friday 1 July

WW says:

I assume that you are looking at a second hand boat. Very few Lombardini engines were installed in narrowboats, although Springer engineering did install some during the late 1970's and early 80's. There are, to my knowledge, no new Lombardini engines installed. Parts for older engines may be difficult to get.
The issue of reliability has been raised by owners before- they were not popular engines and many have been replaced, though there are, of course, ones still running well in boats. The usual checks apply as for any secondand engine, but be prepared that the engine, in an older boat, may be nearing the end of its useful life, especially if it hasn't been looked after.
