Q & A

Price for fitting an inverter.

A retired boater lady neighbour has purchased a used inverter to replace her old, broken one.
Her usual mobile service engineer wants £150 to fit it and I believe that is way too expensive.
He will travel 15 miles to be here.
Any advice is appreciated.

On the face of it, this does seem a lot but it really depends on what he has to do. If it is just a matter of unbolting one inverter and installing another in its place, it does look rather expensive. However, if the installation is as past its use-by date as the old inverter - or the new inverter is much bigger than the old one - he may have to replace all the wiring, the trip switch board, the main cut-off switch and the galvanic isolator. In this case, £150 including travelling starts to look much more reasonable.
