Gardner engine

My Gardner 4l2 engine has started to race when in neutral, this only happens when engine is hot after say 2 hours of running, anyone know the cause of this, thank you.

WW says:

Listers can do this when a leak on the fuel system allows diesel to mix with the oil in the sump; when the engine is hot it will run on the vapour via the crankcase breather. I don't think that this is likely on a Gardner and it is more likely to be a problem with the governor. It might be sticking when warm and not regulating the amount of fuel properly when the load is reduced.
