Q & A

Anyone with experience of a JCB engine?

I have just bought an 'empty with everything to do' Westlander dutch barge. I have to buy an engine and am considering a JCB 85hp. It has only been on the market since 2005 so there is not much historical information to find. Or is there recommendations for any other make. I want to buy a new engine. The boat will eventually weigh around 25 tons. Any info would be gratefully recieved. Thanks

WW says:

JCB engines are already sold and marinised through Mermaid Marine- in both the 85hp (non-turbo) and 115hp (turbocharged) version.
I don't know a huge amount about these engines, as they are fairly recently produced- and 85hp is reasonable output for a barge, although you might consider a reserve if you are going for much tidal/coastal work.
Will update this post after discussion with some others.

I would think the engine would have to be marinised for said useage. this can be costly

Thank you for answers - I know about Mermaid Marine, infact that is where I would buy the engine, already marinised. I just wondered if anyone had a JCB and could tell me how it runs and how consumption is etc. Thanks for making enquires for me!
