Renting a houseboat in London

I would like to live on a narrowboat/houseboat in East London for 12 months.

I am not in a position to buy - I have searched on the internet but most of the rental sites seem to be for holidays rather than living.

What's the best way to go about finding a houseboat for rent, or even a room in a shared boat?

WW says:

There are very few boats that are openly rented for living on. In fact, this is probably not allowed... the boat would have to either have a hire boat licence or a residential licence (and these are like gold-dust!).

I think it is unlikely that you will find a boat to live on in this way- and I would generally suggest that living on a boat is not the cheap option it seems, and not for people who are not genuine boat enthusiasts.

For more advice, I would suggest joining or speaking to the residential boat owners association. www.rboa.org.uk They also produce and excellent book, giving more advice on Living Afloat. Worth the small cost!
