how do i connect a battery isolater switch thanks

The recommended practice is always to put isolators in the positive supply leads. You need to use good heavy duty battery/welding type cable with well secured connectors. Obviously the switch needs to be up to the job too. Ideally you need an isolator for each battery bank, (e.g starter battery and domestics). sometimes there is a separate fused small supply that bypasses the switch for things that need a permanent 12V supply (e.g memory backup on radios, central heating timeclocks, automatic bilge pumps etc).
