Q & A

can you cruise French waterways during the winter

If you live aboard a dutch barge and want to explore all the european waterways can you continue your journey all year round or are you obliged to find moorings during the winter months?

WW says:

Many French waterways are open to navigation in some way over the winter months. However, passage 'on demand' is often limited to commercial boats, and pleasure boats must book their passage - sometimes the previous day, sometimes as much as 15 days in advance! A fee may also be payable.

As a result, if you intend to continue cruising through the winter, you will need to plan your itinerary carefully. The VNF website has full timetables - http://www.vnf.fr/vnf/content.vnf?action=content&occ_id=11904 - and it goes without saying that you'll need to speak French to understand them.
