WW says:

The Sankey and the Bridgewater were the first canals, and they are both broad. The narrow canals are attributed to Brindley who came up with the size of 70' by 7' for the standard boat, and built his canals to pass a boat of this size. This was primarily because the engineering is easier for a narrow canal.
The later canals were built wide to increase their capacity and the revenue earned from them. The narrow boats were however then established as the "Standard".
A very brief timeline of canal development!
