I am looking to purchase a wide beam sailaway for self fit out,, whats the biggest shell that is practical. I want to base it on the thames initially and cruise the southern waterways

WW says:

Most of the southern waterways will nominally accommodate a boat of up to 14ft width (beam) and 70ft length, but you'll find that canal locks can become rather tight at that size.

Consequently most owners restrict themselves to around 12ft 6in. You can find full details of canal dimensions (as the canals are tighter than the Thames) at waterscape.com, though the site appeared to be unavailable as I write this!
